About the spot

The Angel has stood on the Bermondsey riverside for centuries. The back terrace, built out on stilts over the Thames, looks straight across to Tower Bridge and the City. Captain Cook is said to have planned his Pacific voyages from one of the back rooms. It is the most cinematic pint you can have before a Millwall game.

Thames-side terrace looking at Tower Bridge. Historic pub with naval and literary history. Cask ale at the bar, full pub menu. Easy bus or walk down to The Den. Quieter than the Bermondsey Beer Mile. River path on the walk back.

There is no better pre-match view in South London. Pint on the river, then a short bus or walk down to The Den.

Pint on the terrace before the walk

First pint with Tower Bridge in view. A bowl of something from the kitchen. Walk south through Bermondsey. Arrive at The Den with the crowd.

Heads up: the terrace fills fast on a sunny matchday. Arrive early or expect to drink standing.

Walk back along the Thames Path after the game for the river at night. One of the great underrated London walks.

What to order

On the drinks side, a pint of cask. A cold lager for the terrace. A glass of wine if you are eating.

From the kitchen, the Sunday roast if you are in on a Sunday. Fish and chips. Anything off the specials board.

Who it suits

Millwall fans who want a proper pre-match. Visitors hunting the best Thames-side pubs. Couples on a matchday. Groups who want a view and a pint. Anyone curious about old maritime London.

The verdict

The Angel is the most beautiful place to start a Millwall matchday. Pick a sunny one and book the terrace.
